Jim Daniel

The Father of Squares Around Victoria

Jim and wife Edna commenced square dancing in 1953 at Happy Valley Square dance Club with Caller Les Schroder,

They continued to dance through the sixties and were foundation members of the VSDA

Jim Joined the VSDA Committee in 1972 and served continuously until retiring in 1989

For 18 years Jim and Edna ran the Thornbury Trinity Square dance Club.

During a discussion at the 3rd State Convention regarding Victoria having its own News Letter, Edna volunteered Jim’s services and working on a hand operated machine, the SAV was produced.

Jim Produced the SAV from 1972 until 1990 when the VSDA progressed to professional Printers.

However Jim Continued to collate the SAV and during this time worked with Five different editors.

His dedication to the SAV was by no means his only achievement for the VSDA. Jim’s other main task was organising the Dinner Dance during its many years at the Heidelberg Civic Centre, arranging tables, organising the catering and the ticketing.

In 1980 Jim received Life Membership to the VSDA and in 1985 Jim and Edna were presented with the Order Of Australia OAM for Service to the Community and Square Dancing.

In 1996 Jim was recognised by the National Square dance Society of Australia and was placed on their Roll Of Honour.
